In a significant advancement for Australia's logistics sector, New Energy Transport has successfully completed the nation's first all-electric heavy road freight delivery.
This landmark journey involved transporting goods from Sydney to Canberra using a fully electric prime mover, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable freight operations.

The electric truck, equipped with a substantial 700 kWh battery, covered the 460-kilometre route on a single charge. Remarkably, the journey was completed 25 minutes faster than traditional diesel counterparts, thanks to the electric vehicle's consistent performance, especially on inclines. Additionally, the operation achieved an 84% reduction in energy costs compared to diesel trucks, highlighting the economic benefits of electric freight transport.

Daniel Bleakley, co-CEO of New Energy Transport, emphasised the broader implications of this achievement. He noted that the successful delivery demonstrates the immediate viability of electric trucks in Australia's freight industry. Bleakley also pointed out that transitioning to electric vehicles can significantly reduce reliance on volatile global oil markets, thereby enhancing the resilience of the nation's supply chains.

Following this successful trial, New Energy Transport plans to establish a pilot fleet of heavy electric trucks in Wilton, southwest of Sydney, by mid-2026. This initiative aims to create Australia's largest electric trucking depot, initially housing up to 50 heavy electric prime movers, with plans to expand the fleet to 200 vehicles by 2031. The depot will be powered by a combination of grid electricity and up to 5 MW of on-site solar energy, featuring high-powered chargers capable of fully recharging the trucks' batteries in under an hour.

This development aligns with the broader industry trend towards electrification. Companies such as Volvo Group Australia are also investing in local manufacturing of heavy-duty electric trucks, indicating a growing commitment to sustainable transport solutions within the sector.

For businesses considering the transition to electric fleets, this milestone serves as a compelling case study. The demonstrated cost savings, operational efficiency, and environmental benefits underscore the potential advantages of adopting electric vehicles in freight operations. As the industry continues to evolve, staying informed about such developments will be crucial for making strategic decisions in fleet management and financing.
